Equity and Inclusion
Equity and inclusion are core values to who I am as a person, and they are a central considerations in all of my activities. I consistently strive to take meaningful action to support minoritized students and colleagues and to make the spaces in which I operate more just, equitable, and inclusive. For me, that begins with maintaining a growth mindset and prioritizing listening, learning, and growing individually. Formally, my commitment to these values has included service in the following capacities:
At UIS:
- Safe Zone/Brave Space Program planning committee, member
- Chancellor's Committee for Belonging, Dignity & Justice, member
- Institute for Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Social Justice, affiliated faculty and steering committee member
- Inclusive Teaching Book Club, member
- Building Inclusive Communities in the Classroom and Beyond Workshop, planning committee member
Prior to joining UIS I have served in the following roles:
- Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) peer mentor
- President's Council on Diversity, Inclusion, and Access (DI&A) at Mines, member
- ReNUWIt Student and Post-Doc Committee on Diversity and Inclusion (SPCDI), member and standing diversity liaison officer
- President's Commission on Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation (GIESO) at WSU, member
- Completing trainings and certifications including the SafeZone Ally Network and Responding to Survivors of Sexual Assault Training at CSM, the Community and Equity certificate program at WSU, and the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project.
Leadership and Service
I believe that the activities of research and teaching should ultimately benefit their discipline, the academy, society, and individuals and that academics should be leaders and engage broadly with their communities. To this end, I participate in activities including:
- Journal of Hydrology, Associate Editor for Urban Hydrology (January 2023-Present)
- M.S. Thesis Advisees: Eric Small (Fall 2022-Spring 2023)
- Advise 6 undergraduate and graduate researchers
- American Geophysical Union (AGU) Session Chair and Convener for "Urban Heat, Water, Vegetation, and Equity" sessions (AGU Fall Meeting 2021-Present)
- K-12 Science Activities including Science Fairs and Math and Science Nights
- Colorado Science Olympiad: I have been the regional and state event supervisor for events including Hovercraft and Water Quality (2017-2021)
- Research Experience for Undergrads (REU): Through ReNUWIt and Mines CEE, I have served on REU application review teams and as an REU mentor (Spring 2018; Summer 2019)
- Research Experience for Teachers (RET): Through the Water-Energy Education for the Next Generation (WE2NG) at Mines, I have served as graduate mentor for K-12 teachers during a summer research experience (Summer 2019)
- Science Scholars Program at WSU: Mentored an undergraduate researcher on research in urban ecohydrology (Fall 2021-Spring 2022)
- Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) Science Communication Fellow/Meet a Scientist Program: Completed trainings and developed a hands-on display of urban heat and water dynamics in cities with general public visitors to the museum (Fall 2021-Summer 2022)
